With a master’s in agronomy, he has dedicated years to exploring various coffee beans, studying their sources, cultivation methods, and unique flavors. His time in the coffee industry has expanded his knowledge and sharpened his tasting skills, instilling a deep respect for each bean’s journey from farm to cup. This dedication led John Parker to create Coffee Xpressio as a place to share his love for coffee with others. In September 2024, he achieved the honor of becoming a licensed Q Grader. The Q Grader license is comparable to a sommelier title in wine. Administered by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), part of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), this certification is among the highest honors in coffee expertise. Earning it requires passing 20 rigorous tests that assess sensory and olfactory skills, with many tests conducted blindly under red light to avoid visual hints, like roast level. The examination also includes green bean grading and thorough coffee knowledge. Pursuing a Q Grader certification demands both a financial and time commitment. Yet, in an online space filled with personal opinions and guesswork, he believes having a foundation in objective standards matters. Sadly, misconceptions and outdated ideas still circulate widely in the coffee field.
